Happy World Oceans Day, L.A.!

In tribute to their heritage and longtime relationship honoring the beauty and power of the sea, lavish skincare brand La Mer has partnered for the fifth time with Oceana – the world’s leading international ocean advocacy organization – to celebrate and support World Oceans Day 2010.

For the 2010 campaign, La Mer has created a limited-edition 100 ml World Oceans Day “blue” Crème de la Mer jar and will make a $200,000 donation to Oceana’s habitat protection efforts.

Marking the first time La Mer has altered their signature Crème de la Mer jar, “going blue” symbolizes the brand’s continued commitment to the oceans. Over the past five years, La Mer has donated more than half a million dollars globally toward Oceana’s sea expeditions, studies and preservation efforts.

Although launched in 1992, The United Nations didn’t make World Oceans Day an official global holiday until last year.  To commemorate this feat and share the experience of Oceana’s extraordinary work, La Mer sponsored a deep-sea dive in Belize with actress and Oceana Spokeswoman January Jones (aka Betty Draper on “Mad Men”).

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Today, June 8th, is World Oceans Day and it feels more personal and sacred than many of the more traditional holidays I grew up celebrating – including Halloween, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. (don’t judge.) For reasons I won’t go into here (thank me later) and more so than many of the places and people I communicate with daily – I’ve always felt the most connected to the sea.

“For though we are strangers in your silent world,
To live on the land we must learn from the sea.”

                                                        – John Denver, Calypso (again, don’t judge)
