Say Yes to Oils

SoaptopiaMost of us change up our look when summer comes around — be it wearing white, linen shirts, sandals, going a shade lighter on our highlights, etc. We wear more sunblock, bigger hats, bolder sunglasses. But what about fragrance? Do you mix it up?

I always switch up my fragrances from day to night. But come summer, I gravitate toward more citrus, light floral, and sea scents. I also opt for more of the roll-on vials, or replace perfume with body oil altogether.

If you have trouble with perfume lasting on hot summer days, I recommend trying body oils. Just slather them onto your damp skin right out of the shower. Look for blends made with almond oil to double as a skin softener.

Soaptopia are my go-to body oils this summer! Skip the perfume, skip the lotion. Just blend a few drops onto damp skin after the shower and you’re good to go. It’s much lighter than lotion so your skin won’t perspire and it doesn’t have the alcohol of perfume so its scent lingers longer. And because it’s an oil, your skin takes on a slight glow.

My favorite Soaptopia oil is Beauty & The Beach – a sweet orange, jasmine and vanilla scent that takes me from morning to cocktails!

Lucy B makes beautiful roll-on oils. They’re perfect for travel and come in memory-evoking scents. My favorite is the Wild Jasmine, a crisp, feminine floral-based scent.

Also look into the Lucy B Gold Frangipani shimmer oil. Love this beachy coconut and argan oil scent (also avail in a non-shimmery roll-on oil!) for summer. It’s a sweet blend of tropical fruit and floral. Dab it on shoulders, décolleté, or wherever you want a sun-kissed shimmer.

Another portable roll-on fragrance worth checking out is by Jouer Cosmetics. I don’t think it has a name? They use a Jojoba Oil, which helps the scent wear really well. If you aren’t into florals, you may want to pass this one up though, since it’s all about the blend of gardenia, jasmine and honeysuckle. Needless to say, I personally love it.

If you’re a spa goer, you’re familiar with Burke Williams. What you may not know is that they’ve added Ayurvedic body treatments to their menu. So since we’re on the subject of oils, it seems apropos to mention their new treatments using “aromatherapeutic” essential oils to help deliver mental relaxation, restoration, and an overall sense of contentment.

The spa chain has partnered with Shankara to provide some of the purest Ayurvedic aromatherapeutic oils in the world. All are made in India, and are 100% organic, paraben, alcohol and chemical free. And this is especially good information, since they’re gently heated and dripped all over you – from scalp to foot.

NOTE: This isn’t a massage, so don’t go in expecting that style of muscle kneading.

Your therapist uses your touch points and zones to create a flow of electromagnetic energy through your body. It’s takes longer than most treatments, too, which is nice. But in all that nourishing relaxation, it’s a challenge to not doze off – which for me always seems like a waste. (I can sleep at home for free!)

The experience should leave you healed and revitalized. Or at least on your way there.

While you’re at Burke Williams, ask about custom-made oils for massage. Certain locations, like Woodland Hills have an entire bar dedicated to them. I usually drive to Ojai for this!
