Soon after turning 40 (gulp.), I started waking up with lovely not-so-little bags under my eyes. No discoloration really, but visibly puffy lids and under eye bags. Whether they’re hereditary (possibly) or a lack of hydration (also possible), I keep trying to get rid of them. As one would.
The bags improve throughout the day, but I still notice the little f**kers.
Last week, I met Dr. Dennis Gross at an event for QVC Beauty in Los Angeles. He taught me that creams don’t get rid of eye puffiness, but serums can. It’s all about serums, Vitamin C and retinols. Got it. I’ll go into those products further in another blog – as well as Dr. Gross’ awesome anti-aging peel pads!
But while I search for an effective eye serum, I have found a temporary solution. The Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firm X Eye gel is no joke! It really does make a difference when used on fine lines and puffiness.
The unfiltered photos I’ve posted above show my eyes before applying the Peter Thomas Roth gel, and then 7 minutes later, post-application (below). I see a difference, do you?
All you do is shake the tube, squeeze a drop on your hand, then use the angled brush to apply a thin layer where needed. Try to keep your face relaxed and expressionless while the gel sets for 5-7 minutes. Wipe away any excess product after it dries. Use it alone or under makeup.
For those who have issues with under eye discoloration and darker circles, creams help – and there are more makeup tricks. But make sure you aren’t just settling for a concealer. You want to neutralize discoloration with a color-correcting product first. Then apply your concealer, foundation or powder after.
Here’s a breakdown of what colors work best to correct certain under eye issues.
- Green: Neutralizes dark circles that have a red tint
- Pink: Tones down blue or purple-hued circles
- Purple: Covers up yellow spots
- Yellow: Instantly brightens dark pigmentation

With you! I started using some avocado stuff from Kiehls. Any thoughts on that product? These bad boys are pricy!
Kiehls is actually not terribly priced in comparison to some others. I believe that’s a cream for moisturizing primarily. It depends what issues you are working to combat?
Great article!!!
Thank you for all the wonderful and useful information.. eye baggage and discoloration are an ongoing problem for me.
Thanks!
YAY! I love hearing that a post was helpful. Let me know if you end up trying something that works well for you!
